Scripture:
Luke 11:2
Starting Question:
What do you do that is just like your Mum or Dad?
Watching You
I hope you don’t mind Country music, because today’s devotional starts with a song called “Watching You” by Rodney Atkins. In this song a little boy learns how to be a man by watching his father - warts and all. In the Chorus the child says, “I’ve been watching you, Dad. Ain't that cool? I’m your buckaroo, I wanna be like you. And eat all my food and grow as tall as you are. … . I wanna do everything you do. ‘Cause I’ve been watching you.”
Each of us becomes like the adults around us. That’s the way we were designed. We become adults in the image of the ones that raised us.
Our relationship with God is similar. We were created in His image. As we watch Him, we become more like Him. As we read Bible stories of how God cares for His people, what He expects of His children and how much He loves us, we are changed to be like Him - from our glory into His glory. By beholding we are changed.
Unlike the father in this song (and the father writing this devotional) God is perfect. He never makes mistakes. Every example He gives is one worth becoming. His example is worthy of respect. As we spend time with God we will come to know His amazing love, grace, compassion and care. And then we will begin to see His character in others - His other Children who are becoming like Him.
As we see more of our Father God in His Word, His world and His people, our respect for Him will grow until, like Jesus, we will begin our prayers, “Father, may your name be kept holy.” Because His name is Wonderful. His name is Almighty. Prince of Peace. King of Kings. Lord of Lords.
And.
His Name is your name. He chose you and gave you His name! Created in His image, being shaped into His Character, children of God love and respect their Father in Heaven and lead others to do the same.
Reflection Question:
How can you keep God's name Holy today?
Prayer time:
Before you pray together, ask: What would you like to say to Jesus today?
